There’s something you
can do right now
Schools
and children all over Wisconsin are losing ground on a quality
education because the state’s unfair and inadequate
school-funding system doesn’t work.
Although the long-term solution to the problem is to change
the funding system, there are changes that can be made in
the state’s next budget to help schools do the right
thing for children and survive until long-term gains can be
made.
Department
of Public Instruction Superintendent Elizabeth
Burmaster and the Governor’s
Task Force on Educational Excellence have both
made recommendations that will bring needed revenue into the
classroom. The next step is to ask Gov. Jim Doyle to include
these recommendations
in his 2005-07 budget.
The basic recommendations are:
- More money for special education aid
- Increased revenues for programs for children
who have English language difficulties
- Additional aid for services and programs
for children from poverty
- Transportation aid changes aimed at children
in small, rural school districts
- A “cost-out” study to determine
what a quality education costs in Wisconsin
At school-funding reform community forums throughout the
state, people are sending that message to Gov. Doyle. You
can, too, by:
1. Printing this form;
2. Filling out the form with your contact information;
3. Putting the form in and your return address on an envelop;
4. Attaching 37-cents in postage; and
5. Mailing it to Gov. Jim Doyle, Office of the Governor,
115 East State Capitol, Madison, WI 53702.
