"Don't Squeeze Schools" Message Delivered in Menasha

Andrew Becker in Menasha

"Close the tax loopholes," said Andrew Becker, a member of the Green Bay School Board.

“Education tops state budget concerns” was the headline in the Appleton Post-Crescent, reporting on the second Joint Committee on Finance hearing in Menasha on Tuesday, March 25, 2003.

Fox River Valley parents, educators, and administrators told legislators schools need expanded funding to deliver for students and communities.

A WAES delegation held a pre-hearing press conference, and then gave individual testimony during the hearing.

Tigerton teacher Peggy Miller said that hurting schools also hurts communities.

The press conference was reported on Fox 11 WLUK-TV in Green Bay, and the Appleton Post-Crescent story featured a fabulous pull-out quote from Peggy Miller, a WAES supporter and kindergarten teacher in the Tigerton School District: “Please consider that cutting funding does not only squeeze schools, it also squeezes communities as well.”

Others speaking at the WAES press conference were Andrew Becker, a member of the Green Bay School Board; Winnie Doxsie, immediate past president of the Wisconsin PTA; Connie Kanitz, a WAES member from Menasha; and Rev. Chris Schwab, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Neenah and representative of the E.S.T.H.E.R. coalition of churches.
