Funding reform resolution press conference photos

Jacinth Sohi, student at Madison West High School, told the crowd and the media at the press conference how the state’s school-funding system has resulted in over $50 million in cuts and the loss of more than 600 FTE staff positions in the Madison Metropolitan School District. (MMSD) Sohi is also the president of the MMSD Student Senate.

Flanked by supporters of Assembly Joint Resolution 35 and Senate Joint Resolution 27, Rep. Sondy Pope-Roberts (D-Verona) hosted a press conference attended by 200 people in the Assembly Parlor, April 19.

Dan Brereton, president of the Florence County School District, explained to the 200 attending the press conference that his school district had been forced to the brink of dissolution because Wisconsin’s school-funding formula can’t keep pace with increasing costs. He challenged lawmakers to come back to Florence and help his community prepare for the next referendum they will need to keep the school’s doors open.

Art Rainwater, superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District, talked about his respect and love for the student in his district. He also pointed out, however, that the school-funding system has to be changed for all of the children of Wisconsin.

Over 200 people attended the press conference, April 19 in the Assembly Parlor of the Capitol, in support of changing Wisconsin’s school-funding system.

The Assembly Parlor was packed with over 200 people, April 19, for the press conference on Assembly Joint Resolution 35 and Senate Joint Resolution 27. The resolutions call on the Legislature to change the formula by July 1, 2009, so that it provides sufficient revenue to educate every child in the state to rigorous academic standards.
